On your iPhone, there is a way to manually install app updates, but there is also an option where you can install these updates automatically as soon as they become available.

  1. Click “Settings”.
  2. Select App Store.
  3. Click on the Application Updates button.

If an app has stopped working because you need to update it to the latest version, you may have gone to the App Store to install that update.

You can then tap the profile picture at the top right of the screen, scroll down and find the app, and then tap the Update button to the right of it.

If you have a lot of updates available, you can even click the Update All button to perform all of these updates at once.

But this can get tedious due to the number of times apps are updated, so you may need a more efficient solution.

Fortunately, there is a setting you can turn on to have your iPhone periodically check for updates for the apps you have installed and then download and apply those updates on its own.

How to turn on automatic updates for iPhone apps

The steps in this section were performed on an iPhone 13 running iOS 16.

Step 1: Locate the Settings app icon on the home screen and tap on it to open the menu.

Your iPhone will automatically update your apps when a green shade appears around the button as in the image above.

Note that there are also a few settings in the Cellular Data section of this menu that you may want to tweak.

If you don’t want your iPhone to download and install these app updates over cellular networks, you should turn off automatic downloads to save your data.
