Prerequisites to transfer eSIM to new iPhone:

  • iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later
  • Both iPhones have been updated to iOS 16 and later.
  • Use the same Apple ID on both iPhones
  • Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Since the iPhone 14 series only supports eSIM for devices sold in the United States, the popularity of eSIM technology is growing rapidly. If you already have an eSIM and want to use it on another device, this is not an easy task. Don’t worry! Here in this article, I am going to share 4 different ways to transfer eSIM to new iPhone.

So, whether you’re upgrading to a new iPhone or just looking to transfer your eSIM plan, you can stay connected and continue enjoying the hassle-free benefits of eSIM.

How to transfer eSIM from one iPhone to another during setup

When you set up a new iPhone, you can transfer your existing eSIM (similar to transferring data).

First, check to see if the SIM card companies support cell plan portability. Then follow the steps below to transfer your eSIM to your new iPhone during setup.

  1. On the Cellular Setup page, select one phone number associated with your Apple ID.
If you don’t see your numbers, tap Transfer From Nearest iPhone.
  2. Click Continue on the popup on your old iPhone.
  3. Enter the verification code shown on your new iPhone.
  4. Complete the setup by following the onscreen prompts.

iOS will immediately deactivate the cellular eSIM plan on your old iPhone when you activate it on your new iPhone.

How to transfer eSIM to new iPhone after setup

Don’t worry if you didn’t move your eSIM during setup. You can still transfer an eSIM from an old iPhone to a new device.

Apple added the eSIM Quick Transfer feature in iOS 16 that uses Bluetooth connectivity. You just need to make sure your other device is close to your current device.

  1. Go to Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Data Plan.
  2. If you haven’t added a phone number, tap Set up Cellular.
  3. It will display the phone numbers associated with your Apple ID. Select Transfer from another iPhone.
  4. On your old iPhone, look for a message asking you to transfer your eSIM phone number to the new one.
  5. Click Submit for approval.
  6. Open Settings on your new iPhone to check if there is a “Finishing your carrier cellular plan setup” prompt. Touch to complete the transfer from your carrier’s web page.

Use your carrier’s app or QR scanner

Not all carriers support the eSIM Quick Transfer feature added by Apple. In this case, you can request and scan a QR code from your carrier.

  1. Click Use QR Code on the Cellular Setup page.
    Your iPhone’s camera will open.
  2. Scan the QR code received from your carrier.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process.

Add an additional eSIM series using a QR code after setting up your iPhone.

  1. Open the Camera app → Scan the eSIM QR code.
  2. Select the detected cellular plan.
  3. Tap Continue → Add Cellular Plan.

If the iPhone asks for a verification code, enter the number provided by your carrier.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a QR code, you can download your carrier’s app from the App Store and activate your eSIM through the app.

Transfer eSIM from one iPhone to another manually

If you don’t have a QR code or mobile app to activate the eSIM on your new iPhone, you can do it manually.

  1. Get information about the eSIM from your carrier’s support.
  2. Go to Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan.
  3. Click Enter Data Manually.
  4. Fill in the details and activate.

Why should you transfer eSIM from your old iPhone to your new iPhone?

Transferring an eSIM from an old iPhone to a new one has many benefits, including:

  • Convenience: Using an old eSIM allows you to transfer your existing cellular plans, phone numbers, and data to your new iPhone without having to purchase new plans or deal with physical SIM cards. This saves you time and effort by making sure that you can quickly start using your new iPhone with your existing cellular connection.
  • Flexibility: With an eSIM, you can have multiple phone numbers or cellular plans on one device. Plus, you still have the flexibility to switch between different plans or numbers on the same device, making it ideal for travelers, business users, or anyone who needs to manage multiple phone lines.
  • Cost savings: Avoid the additional costs associated with setting up new cellular plans or purchasing new SIM cards. You don’t need to pay for SIM activation or buy physical SIM cards.
  • environmental impact. By switching your eSIM instead of buying a new physical SIM card, you help reduce the electronic waste associated with physical SIMs. This promotes environmentally friendly practices and is in line with sustainable efforts to reduce the environmental impact of e-waste.
